Express Entry Canada

Express Entry is an online system managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to select eligible skilled workers for Canadian Permanent Residence. Candidates create an online profile, receive a CRS score, and may be invited to apply for permanent residence through periodic invitation rounds.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For eligible skilled workers with qualifying Canadian work experience.

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): For skilled workers with qualifying foreign or Canadian work experience.

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): For workers qualified in eligible skilled trades.

Certain Provincial Nominee Program streams are also aligned with Express Entry.

Eligibility depends on the federal immigration program. Applicants are assessed based on factors such as skilled work experience, language proficiency, education, and other program-specific requirements. Candidates must qualify under at least one of the three federal Express Entry programs before entering the pool.

Yes. Eligible applicants can create an Express Entry profile and apply for Canadian Permanent Residence while living outside Canada. Canadian work experience is not mandatory for every Express Entry program.

Not necessarily. A job offer is not required under the Canadian Experience Class or Federal Skilled Worker Program. The Federal Skilled Trades Program requires either a qualifying job offer or a Canadian certificate of qualification in the relevant skilled trade.

Canadian Experience Class: CLB/NCLC 7 for TEER 0 or 1 occupations and CLB/NCLC 5 for TEER 2 or 3.

Federal Skilled Worker Program: Minimum CLB/NCLC 7 in all four language abilities.

Federal Skilled Trades Program: Minimum CLB/NCLC 5 in speaking and listening and CLB/NCLC 4 in reading and writing.

An ECA is generally required for applicants relying on foreign education to qualify under the Federal Skilled Worker Program or to claim CRS points for foreign educational credentials.

There is no universal maximum age for Express Entry. However, age affects CRS points, and applicants generally receive fewer age-related points as they get older.

  • Obtaining higher approved language test scores.
  • Improving French-language proficiency.
  • Completing additional recognized education.
  • Gaining qualifying Canadian work experience.
  • Obtaining an eligible provincial nomination.
  • Claiming applicable spouse or partner factors.
  • Meeting other qualifying CRS criteria.

As of October 2026, a positive LMIA does not automatically provide additional CRS points. Effective November 3, 2026, IRCC will introduce a Labour Market Integration factor that may award points for qualifying Canadian work experience or an eligible high-wage job offer. Under the revised Express Entry rules, an LMIA will not be required solely for a job offer to qualify.

Generally, work experience obtained while engaged in full-time studies does not count toward the minimum Canadian Experience Class work experience requirement. This includes most employment completed while holding a study permit, even if the work was legally authorized.

IRCC's 2026 categories include:

  • French-language proficiency.
  • Healthcare and social services occupations.
  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) occupations.
  • Trade occupations.
  • Education occupations.
  • Transport occupations.
  • Physicians with Canadian work experience.
  • Senior managers with Canadian work experience.
  • Researchers with Canadian work experience.
  • Skilled military recruits.

An Express Entry profile generally remains valid for 12 months, provided the candidate continues to meet the applicable eligibility requirements.

Applicants generally have 60 calendar days from receiving an Invitation to Apply to submit a complete electronic Application for Permanent Residence (e-APR).

Eligible Express Entry permanent residence applicants already in Canada may qualify for a Bridging Open Work Permit after submitting a qualifying permanent residence application and meeting the applicable requirements. Simply entering the Express Entry pool or receiving an Invitation to Apply does not make you eligible for a BOWP.

Applications may be refused due to:

  • Insufficient proof of qualifying work experience.
  • Incorrect NOC classification.
  • Inaccurate CRS point claims.
  • Expired language tests or educational assessments.
  • Insufficient settlement funds where required.
  • Missing or inconsistent documents.
  • Medical or criminal inadmissibility.
  • Misrepresentation or failure to disclose relevant information.
